Blackstar/Illness as Metaphor
Brush & Ink, Bristol
After David Bowie's death I made this comic for Lumpen that quoted Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor. The magazine's theme for that particular issue was "great people and groups for positive change." I drew a correlation between Sontag's musings on illness (ie: cancer) and Bowie's final album, which did much the same during his final days of life. Even the album's title, Blackstar, was purportedly in reference to a type of cancer.

These works had particular resonance for me, since I'd been suffering from chronic pain in both my hands. It was a pain that had been a great hinderance to my own art-making practice, and one that was taking its toll on me mentally and emotionally, as I struggled with a deep depression.
